La práctica de Pei-Hsuan Wang extrae las viscerales profundidades de la subjetividad y la vulnerabilidad contemporáneas. Partiendo de la memoria, la nostalgia familiar, las fantasías, la retórica actual y la utilización de una variedad de medios, Wang combina procesos escultóricos con intervención espacial para incitar el significado de objetos y espacios comunes, creando escenarios poéticos que dan forma a la experiencia interior. Iris, la sobrina de la artista, de 11 años, ha sido la fuerza gravitacional de varios proyectos recientes que exploran la hibridación racial, la inseguridad de la identidad, la niñez-maternidad-maternidad y la blancura en la intersección de culturas y generaciones.
Pei-Hsuan Wang tiene una licenciatura de Macalester College, MN y un MFA de Cranbrook Academy of Art, MI, EE. UU. Vive y trabaja entre Asia y Estados Unidos y fue residente en ISCP, Nueva York (2018), Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, Corea (2018), y residente invitada en la Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, Holanda (2019). Wang es el ganador del Premio Especial del Jurado del Premio Juvenil Huayu 2019 en China, y será un laureado en HISK en Gante, Bélgica (2021).
Pei-Hsuan Wang’s practice mines the visceral depths of contemporary subjectivity and vulnerability. Particularly of interest is the becoming of individual personhood in relation to the collective and the greater narrative. Her upbringing navigating between the East and the West has set an unsettling undertone to her work that both negates and affirms cultural and geographical categorization. Drawing from memory, family nostalgia-fantasies, current rhetoric, and utilizing a variety of media, Wang combines sculptural processes with spatial intervention to incite meaning from commonplace objects and spaces, creating poetic scenarios that give form to inner experience. The artist’s 11-year-old niece Iris has been the gravitational force for a number of recent projects that explore racial hybridity, identity insecurity, girlhood-womanhood-motherhood, and whiteness at the intersection of cultures and generations.
Pei-Hsuan Wang holds a BA from Macalester College, MN and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, MI, USA. She lives and works between Asia and the United States and was resident at ISCP, New York (2018), Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, Korea (2018), and guest resident at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2019). Wang is the winner of Special Jury Price of the 2019 Huayu Youth Award in China, and will be a laureate at HISK in Ghent, Belgium (2021).
