| ARS ELECTRONICA (Austria) Austrian Panorama with contributions from Sascha Vernik, Celine Pham, Sophie Gartner, Neo Klinger, and Verena Repar. This collection features a mix of experimental and humorous animations by selected artists born or based in Austria. The compilation kicks off with a comical twist with Annoyance by Sascha Vernik, an animated short about an annoying fly that wreaks havoc on a hipster’s life and thwarts his attempts to bite into a vegetarian wrap. A hybrid of live action, drawing, and artificial intelligence, LUCID by Celine Pham presents a mesmerizing interplay of dance, music, and neural style transfer. Echoes of Mourning by Verena Repar is an AI-generated personal essay that takes the viewer on a phantasmagorical journey through memory, the unconscious, and trauma. Last but not least, Abyss by artistic duo Sophie Gartner and Neo Klinger offers a dark, bitter, and ironic take on the apocalypse. LE CUBE (Morocco) Displaced Realities, featuring contributions from Alina d’Alva Duchrow (Brazil), Mi Jung Shin (South Korea), Yasmine El Meleegy (Egypt) and Maria Hanl (Austria). This curatorial proposal takes as its starting point Maria Hanl’s video “Dove of Peace,” a work that critically examines the absurdity and manipulation inherent in official narratives. Through their works, the participating artists investigate the ways in which terminology and narratives can be distorted, leading to blurred memory and impacting our understanding of reality. This exploration considers how dominant forces—whether political, cultural, or economic—control the narratives that frame collective memory. Highlighting the tension between individual and institutional narratives, the artists reveal how selective narratives can obscure or even rewrite truths, thereby influencing our perceptions of history and identity. However, realities, though often suppressed and relegated to the shadows, are never completely erased. With a closer look—scratching the surface and dusting it off, combing through archives and reopening forgotten drawers—these hidden truths can resurface, allowing new, or perhaps long-forgotten, narratives to come to light. DVD PROJECT (various) Starring: Control your enemies by Charlotte Desaga, Infektionsrisiko by Marisa Masa, The Lowe Society by Bas van den Hurk & Wouter Verhoeven, Oasi nel deserto (Hacking City) by Francesca Fini, Philosoccer by Nives Widauer, Beach by Perla Montelongo, Which is my flag? by Laurita Siles DVD Project, 2005-22, is an international project for video art with the aim to show emergent and experimental video art and to create a democratic and accessible platform mostly for emergent artists. The sample nowadays possesses the emergent creations from 200 pieces from 20 countries though diverse international commissioners are working in order that the project extended the nationalities. At our festival, we invite you to see films by young, experimental, and passionate filmmakers who seek to awaken your senses in a way that’s different from the typical Hollywood film. In addition to films, we also have an extensive program of screenings, exhibitions, and workshops. Thanks in part to our wide range of side events, BUTFF is known as a great place for lovers of alternative music, poetry, and (performing) art.
