Monogatari of Huannan

The work focuses on the unique olfactory landscape of traditional markets in Taiwan. The artist collects scent data from the market during both day and night, using statistical analysis and algorithmic computation to translate these invisible olfactory experiences into visual symbols. Within the imagery, one can catch a glimpse of the scent of sweat from market laborers intertwined with airborne phenethylamine molecules— colliding, merging, and coexisting. These scent elements resemble the passage of time through fermentation and aging, undergoing processes of condensation and liquefaction, gradually transforming into suspended particles within the space. They constantly shift at random, reassembling through algorithmic permutations, floating and diffusing in a dynamic flow—an interpretation of the distinctive scents cape found only in Taiwan’s traditional markets.
