Sergi Aguilar is a visual artist born in Spain.

He studied at the Massana School and at the Barcelona Book Arts Conservatory between 1962 and 1967, at which point he came into contact with the sculptural work of Julio González, Constantin Brancusi and the Russian Constructivists, among others. Over the next four years he continues his training and expands his creative interests with personal stays in Paris, London, Prague, Stuttgart and Menorca.
In 1972 he began to work as a sculptor. His first objects are abstract volumes that bear in mind the observation and analysis of nature. Between 1973 and 1980 he made a series of marble blocks of post-minimalist influence.
At the beginning of the eighties, his sculptures lead to constructions with the concepts of enclosure and ramp as the main references. He uses steel, a material that allows him to build different planes whose intersection introduces the ideas of mobility and dimension, as opposed to the concept of a block.
From 1993 he began to work with drawings and photographs of places that he had visited. He often uses this graphic material in his sculptures, combining it with structures or translating it into volumes.
By 2005 he was abandoning sculpture understood as a solid and independent entity; from then on, the territory becomes the theme and main axis of his work, to which he incorporates the notion of displacement.
He has had solo and group exhibitions in Europe, the United States and Japan, mainly in galleries. He has also exhibited in centers such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, and has participated in various group exhibitions on Spanish sculpture. His work is in the collections of the MACBA, the Kunsthalle in Mannheim, the Fundació «la Caixa», the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Fundació Banc Sabadell, the Fundación Juan March and the Universitat Autonomous of Barcelona, ​​among others.
He has also made sculptures for the public space, such as the works Júlia (1987) and Interior (1987) in Barcelona and Marca d’aigua. He pays tribute to Carlos Barral (1992) on the beach of La Pineda de Vila-seca (Tarragona) and The Pass of the Clouds (2003) in the Prado park, in Vitoria-Gasteiz. In the field of teaching, he has given courses, seminars and conferences in various institutions, such as Arteleku, the Botín Foundation, the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona and the Eina School of Barcelona.
