Gema Polanco
Artist
Spain
2025
Her work, primarily focused on installation, also integrates textiles, drawing, music, photography, and performance. She is constantly in search of new places, alter egos, and spaces of possibility that allow us to become who we want to be—beyond the historical and gendered legacies that categorize and confine us. Aligning herself with the aesthetics of Rock and Punk, visual culture, and the trance induced by music, her practice embraces rebellion, spontaneity, and the surreal to enable new forms of care—honest, accessible, and peaceful.
She holds a degree in Photography from the London College of Communication (London, 2015), a postgraduate degree from the PHotoEspaña Master’s program (Madrid, 2016), and a Master’s in Visual Arts and Education from the University of Barcelona (Barcelona, 2017).
Her work has been shown at festivals such as Circulation(s) in Paris, PhotoEspaña, PhotoAlicante, Art Nou, Loop Barcelona, the Miami New Media Festival (Miami), and Aragón Park.
Recently, her work has entered the collections of IVAM – Institut Valencià d’Art Modern and CA2M – Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo. Over the past year, she has participated in Babel. Materia y Lenguaje. Colección Kells at the Centre del Carme de Cultura Contemporània (Valencia), Built a house and watched it burn at Galería Moisés Pérez de Albéniz (Madrid), and held solo exhibitions at Stain Projects (Mallorca) and Jorge López Galería (Valencia). She also recently exhibited at ARCO 2025 with Galería Moisés Pérez de Albéniz. In parallel, Gema Polanco works as an art director, film director, curator, and stylist, primarily in the music industry. She is also the founder of Navaja Automática, a project that transforms the visual culture of music into fashion, prints, and fanzines under the D.I.Y. legacy since 2017.
