It seems that there is not much of the initial hope that digitization and Internet technology could contribute to human emancipation and a fairer future. Surveillance scandals, reliance on a few mega-corporations, and empty self-centeredness increasingly dominate perceptions of the digital world. However, these negative trends are challenged by independent enthusiasts who vehemently defend the first dream of a free Internet.

The Internet Archive is one of the important institutions in this fight. «When I look at stones it plunges me into deep time, when I look at my hard drive, I am afraid it will break» gives a poetic impression of the Archives headquarters in San Francisco.
