Enterrar Las Banderas En El Mar

To bury the flags in the sea is an action on and from the land. An action regarded as a reelaborated place based on the experience and rebuilt as images that get created from the landscape, both from their historic contexts and their possibilities for the future. The work is physically developed in a place of historical border conflicts whose boundaries have become tense again due to the increasing migrations in the South American continent. This being the case, the project is the epicentre of distant territories and regional migrations, taking Antofagasta as the main set, a concrete case able to get into a global issue. Our current world is on the verge of facing the resurgence of exacerbate nationalisms and excluding regionalisms. Thus, “Enterrar las banderas en el mar” seeks to rethink the tensions dwelling among nationalism, patriotism, militarism and their direct consequences on the xenophobia and other forms of discrimination. This work proposes to diffuse both these tensions and their social implications through the poetics of the gesture: to keep the flags grouped in the same place, moving in unison; submerged together in the sea. *Project developed in SACO Festival de Arte Contemporáneo 8, with the participation of students from the Complejo Educativo Juan José Latorre Benavente, comuna de Mejillones, Chile.
