Willie Doherty (born 1959) is an artist from Northern Ireland who has primarily worked in photography and video. He has been nominated for the Turner Prize twice.

Doherty was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, and studied at Ulster Polytechnic in Belfast from 1978 to 1981. As a child, he witnessed Bloody Sunday in Derry, and many of his works address The Troubles. Some of his pieces appropriate images from the media and adapt them for his own purposes.

Doherty’s works explore the multiple meanings inherent in a single image. He has suggested that this interest may have originated from his experience of witnessing Bloody Sunday and subsequently learning that many photographs of the incident did not convey the complete truth. Some of Doherty’s earliest works feature maps and similar images accompanied by texts, reminiscent of the land art of Richard Long, although here the text sometimes appears to contradict the image.

Doherty’s video installations are often projected in enclosed spaces, evoking a sense of claustrophobia. The videos themselves sometimes evoke a mood akin to film noir.
