Pham Ngoc Lan (Phạm Ngọc Lân) is an emerging artist/ filmmaker in Hanoi, Vietnam with a background in urban planning. Using film and photography as two of the main tools to express his ideas, his artworks attach special importance to the direct, poetic and especially the whimsical aspects of human life. They are also associated with the urban relationship issue, spreading from the minimal city landscapes to the shift of the citizen’s conscious- ness.
From 2012, Lan’s first film ‘The Story of Ones’ was screened in numerous film festivals and art museums, include Visions du Reel (Switzerland), CPH-DOX (Denmark), New Cinema and Contemporary Art – Rencontres Internationales (France), Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (Japan), etc. One year later, he was granted for an Invitation Programme for Creators Residency in Hokkaido, Japan, where he organized his first exhibition.
In 2015, Lan’s first short fiction project ‘Another City’ participated in the Short Film Station in Berlinale Talents. One year later, the final production premiered at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival (Germany) under Berlinale Shorts Competition and competed in Palm Spring Film Festival (USA) under International Competition. It also received awards from IndieLisboa International Independent Film Festival and Chicago Underground Film Festival. His second short fiction film ‘Mot Khu Dat Tot’ (English name: Blessed Land), in 2019, once again, joined Berlinale Shorts Competition. These work make him become the first Vietnamese director who has short films nominated for golden bears.
