Mohammad Alfaraj
Artist, Installation Art, Photography, Video, Writing
Saudi Arabia

Mohammad Alfaraj was born and raised in Al Ahsa, a remote town in eastern Saudi Arabia. Life in the secluded oasis has informed his interest in nature and ecology, which he explores through a multidisciplinary practice that includes video, photography, installations, and writing.

Committed to social and environmental activism, his work presents a world on the verge of collapse – yet always with an undertone of hope. Blurring fiction and non-fiction, he seeks states of coexistence between man and nature. An interest in the connection between form and concept, how each shapes the other, is expressed through superimposition, combination, and juxtaposition. These techniques include the use of natural materials, the appropriation of social modes, such as children’s games and stories of people working the land, as well as aesthetic expressions like photomontage and collage.

Mohammad graduated with a Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in 2017. His work has been shown at the Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah (2019); Le Murate Pac, Florence (2019); Athr Gallery, Jeddah, (2018); 21’39 Jeddah Arts (2017, 2019); Saudi Film Festival, Dammam (2015) and Dubai International Film Festival (2014). He is the programmer for Tajreeb during the inaugural Red Sea International Film Festival, an innovative presentation of experimental cinema; previously, he worked as a programmer for the Saudi Film Festival and the Poetry House Festival, both in Dammam.
