Brazil
Born in Viamão, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Lia Letícia started her career in scenography for theatre and samba schools. In the late 1990s, she moved to Olinda, in the Northeastern state of Pernambuco, and explored painting in a variety of media, including audiovisual. From then came the first investigations into video-art and experimental films. Besides writing and directing her own films, Lia Letícia works as an art director. Her works travel between cinema festivals and art galleries, and she disseminates this experience through actions such as the Cinecão film festival, and art education in audiovisual experimentation projects like Escola Engenho. She jointly coordinates projects at Galeria Maumau and is part of the Black and Indigenous art collective Coletivo CARNI de Arte Negra e Indígena. Currently, she is post-producing a video-art project, co-writing and co-directing the television series Brasil Visual, and is preparing a solo exhibition in Rio de Janeiro. Lia Letícia lives in Recife, Pernambuco.
Lia Letícia bases her work not on the exceptionality and alleged autonomy of art, but on its opposite: its commonality, disputes and violence. For Lia, art is part of conflicts and constructions of culture and, as such, must be thought out, criticised and tensioned by cultural practices that live surrounding the core of its economic, political and symbolic hegemony.
