Itziar Okariz (San Sebastián, April 21, 1965) is a Spanish artist who currently lives in Bilbao.
She studied sculpture and painting at the University of the Basque Country and graduated in 1990.
Her work uses both photographs and video installations and performance, drawing inspiration from the forms of International Situationism. Her work has often been characterized by the production of actions that question norms around language and the production of the signs that define us as subjects. Although she defines herself as a «feminist citizen», she is often defined as a feminist artist even though she disagrees with the label.
In 2018, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, her video Irrintz. Repetition 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96 (2001-2002) was selected among the works from the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía to be represented in the exhibition The Power of Art, located in the buildings of the Congress of the Deputies and the Senate.
In 1993 she received the third prize at the New Artists Contest in San Sebastián and in 1995 the first prize at the Gure Artea of the Basque Country.
