Carolee Schneemann

Carolee Schneemann (Fox Chase, Pennsylvania, October 12, 1939 – March 6, 2019) was an American visual artist specializing in performance, known for her discourses on the body, sexuality, and gender.

She received a B.A. from Bard College and an M.F.A from the University of Illinois. Her work was characterized mainly by the investigation of visual traditions, taboos, and the body of the individual in relation to social entities. Her works have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the London National Film Theater. Schneemann taught at various universities, including the California Institute of the Arts, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Hunter College, and Rutgers University, where she was the first art professor to hire. In addition, he published widely, producing works, such as Cézanne, She Was a Great Painter «Cézanne, was a great painter» (1976) and More than Meat Joy: Performance Works and Selected Writings «More than Meat Joy: Performance Works and Writings selected «(1997).

Schneemann’s works have been associated with a variety of art classifications such as Fluxus, Neo-Dada, Beat Generation, and Happening.
