The artist explores different perspectives on a curious incident he experienced when he fell to the ground nine times due to the antics of a dog that unexpectedly crossed his path. However, even though the incident had a cause, as he himself explains, «the development and resolution of the piece» are open to a myriad of possibilities.

«So the study was, and still is to some extent, the space in which one examines the potential of a piece that nonetheless occurred outside of it.» Here, production takes on a dual meaning, involving both preparation and causation, as much of Alÿs’ work hinges on spontaneity and unforeseen events. In essence, one could argue that through his walks, Alÿs has not only engaged in the act of wandering but has also illuminated an enduring theme: peripeteia.
