Espacio Proa has been located since mid-2017 in what was once the studio of Miguel Brayda—stage designer and artist—from whom we have inherited the phrases and advice that appear in EL CHIP PRIMIGENIO, with which we at Proa identify and strive not to forget. They offer a good summary of our attitude, our tone.

We are the result of the need for a space in which to produce, combined with the desire to respond to and participate in the current artistic landscape, without leaving behind neighborhood culture. As creators and generators of content, we do not want to overlook the physical space in which the precariousness of the “emerging” label—assigned to us by our sector—has placed us. Embracing that sense of emergence, we consider proactivity the key concept that should define the attitude of artists, who are now taking the initiative to change and improve the cultural model in which we live.

Our space is dedicated to both individual and collective contemporary creation, with transversal and multidisciplinary projects. The fluidity of the projects and activities housed at PROA is tied together by an unrooted and undisciplined attitude within contemporary and conceptual art today, assuming a pedagogical role within the neighborhood.

The space—and our identity—is built collectively, as something self-generated and self-managed each day by the resident artists, collaborators, and neighbors.
