Marijke van Warmerdam
Artist, Cinema, Photography, Sculpture, Video
New Amstel, Netherlands
Marijke van Warmerdam (1959, Nieuwer Amstel, NL) is internationally recognized for her short films, photographs and sculptures, forming an extraordinarily consistent body of work. She first achieved international recognition in the Dutch pavilion at the 1995 Venice Biennale with her looping short films, a medium, which involved a characteristic modification of the movie projector.
In her work, she depicts small moments in life, manipulating them with simple techniques, often mechanical, such as repetition, mirrors, or changes in focus. Van Warmerdam creates an abstraction, capturing a timeless, almost still moment. In a recent collaboration, she produced four videos for music composed by Louis Andriessen, which were screened at the Elfo Puccini Theater in Naples, the Palladium Theater in Rome, the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam, and La Fabrica Galeria in Madrid.
Marijke van Warmerdam’s work has appeared in numerous major international exhibitions, including the Galleri Riis, Oslo (2017), MAMCO (Musée d’art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva (2014), Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, Dusseldorf (2014), Centraal Museum, Utrecht (2014), Museum Schepenhuis, Mechelen (2014), Galeria Estrany de la Mota, Barcelona (2013), Fries Museum, Leeuwarden (2013), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2011), Elfo Puccini Theater, Milan (2010), Carnegie Hall, New York (2010), Berlin, Kwangju and the Venice Biennials (2001, 1998, 1995) and many others.
