Jõao María Gusmão & Pedro Paiva
Artist, Installation Art, Sculpture, Video
Lisbon, Portugal
Gusmão and Paiva are two Portuguese artists born in Lisbon in 1979 and 1977 respectively.
Both have collaborated since 2001 to make what they call «poetic philosophical fictions.» Most of their works are sculptures, installations and short films with amateur actors; their pieces show an interest in the paranormal, the inexplicable, illusion and complexity in the production of images. One of the first series entitled “DeParamnésia” (2001-02) addresses issues related to perception, the unconscious and déjà vu. Since then, their practice has been more research-based. For example, their latest works expand Abissologia, a term coined by the French author René Daumal, which describes the science of the abyss.
