Joan Jonas, born in New York on July 13, 1936, is an American visual artist and a pioneer in performance and video art. Emerging in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Jonas’s projects and experiments laid the foundation for much of video performance art. She has had a profound influence on conceptual art, theatre, performances, and other visual media. Jonas currently resides and works in New York and Nova Scotia, Canada.
