Candice Breitz
Artist, Moving Images
Johannesburg, South Africa

Candice Breitz (born in Johannesburg, 1972) is a Berlin-based artist whose moving image installations have been exhibited internationally.

Throughout her career, she has explored the dynamics by which individuals shape their identity in relation to a broader community. This encompasses not only the immediate familial community but also the real and imagined communities influenced by questions of national belonging, race, gender, and religion. Additionally, these communities are increasingly moulded by the pervasive influence of mainstream media, including television, film, and other popular cultures. More recently, Breitz’s work has delved into the conditions that foster empathy, reflecting a media-saturated global culture. This culture witnesses a strong identification with fictional characters and celebrity figures juxtaposed with widespread indifference to the struggles of those facing real-world adversity.
