Rear Window

The creation of a video-installation where what is hidden gets replaced by fantasy. “Rear window”, the thousand and one windows film, the number one voyeur’s dream, Jeffries, is in this case emptied of neighbours with the patience of the surgeon: scene by scene, frame by frame, so that we can play the main role replacing the binoculars with imagination. The several stages are ready to be the screen of our mental projections (stories). Based on all these scenes, two films were made in order to be projected in a great installation. They are accompanied by a series of piled monitors or televisions which pretend to be windows while broadcasting film scenes, allowing to fantasize about the life that may hide behind. The spectator is abandoned by the director, the script and the actors; he/she just finds windows in front of him/her. Now, we are the ones who decide what belongs to the private or the public sphere, what we do or do not accept to see. Jeffries meddles in others lives, in their acts, it is his way to know them. However, by removing the actors, Christophe Litou goes into those people’s intimacy via spaces and objects.
