Este cortometraje ha surgido de la residencia artística de Xavi Bou con la Universidad de Lovaina en Bélgica dentro del proyecto Reveal Flight. Xavi Bou planteó el proyecto con esta pregunta casi de ciencia ficción: ¿Se contarán todos los pájaros del mundo algún día?
La tendencia en nuestra sociedad es hacia tener más datos y monitorear cualquier parámetro que le sea útil, incluida la vida silvestre. Xavi Bou se pregunta si en el futuro se llegará al punto de tener registrado a cada ser vivo en este planeta.
Para mostrar este paradigma, el autor propuso a la universidad generar un modelo que permitiera identificar a los pájaros que aparecen en sus videos.
Para ello, utilizó un modelo de inteligencia artificial que, a partir de una base de datos de aves, «aprendió» a reconocer lo que es un pájaro en vuelo. El modelo pudo detectar la posición del cuerpo del pájaro y definirlo dentro de un rectángulo. Se decidió contar a los individuos que aparecían en la pantalla y añadir las coordenadas dentro de él.
El discurso que escuchamos en el cortometraje proviene de un texto que surge al plantear la pregunta: ¿Será posible contar todos los pájaros del mundo algún día? A un modelo generador de texto por inteligencia artificial.
Las respuestas han sido expresadas por otro modelo que genera voz a partir de estos textos. Debido a que estamos en una etapa temprana en el campo de la inteligencia artificial, los errores son muy comunes, a veces incluso ingenuos.
Los errores que aparecen al detectar a los pájaros, así como los discursos, que aunque parecen convincentes, no están dotados de ningún sentido, les otorgan peculiaridades casi humanas, generando una atmósfera de extrañeza al observar el resultado.
This short film has emerged from Xavi Bou’s artistic residence with the UCLouvain university in Belgium within the Reveal Flight project. Xavi Bou raised the project with this almost science-fiction question; Will all the birds in the world be counted one day?
The trend in our society is towards having more data and monitoring any parameter that is useful to it, including wildlife. Xavi Bou wonders if in the future it will reach the point of having every living being on this planet registered.
To show this paradigm, the author proposed to the university to generate a model that would allow identifying the birds that appear in his videos.
To do this, he used an artificial intelligence model that, from a bird database, “learned” to recognize what a bird is in flight. The model was able to detect the position of the bird’s body and define it within a rectangle. It was decided to count the individuals that appeared on the screen and add the coordinates within it.
The speech that we hear in the short comes from a text that arises from asking the question: Will it be possible to count all the birds in the world one day? To a text generator model by artificial intelligence.
The answers have been voiced by another model that generates voice from these texts. Because we are at an early stage in the field of Artificial Intelligence, mistakes are very common, sometimes even naive.
The errors that appear when detecting the birds, as well as the speeches, which although they seem convincing, are not endowed with any sense, give them almost human peculiarities, generating an atmosphere of strangeness when observing the result.
