Tony Oursler nació en Nueva York en 1957 y es una importante figura de la escena artística norteamericana. Fue en Cal Arts (California Institute of Arts) donde grabó sus primeras cintas de vídeo y conoció al artista Mike Kelley con quien en 1977 fundó un grupo de punk-rock experimental, The Poetics.
Dentro del videoarte, Tony Oursler recurre a una forma de dramatización que hibrida una amplia variedad de medios: vídeo, película, fotografía, pintura y escultura, pero también cintas musicales y sonoras que son objeto de un trabajo específico.
Muy pronto, extendió el diseño de la pantalla a soportes inusitados, a escala de la arquitectura y del espacio público, pero también en maniquíes de trapo (los famosos dummies o muñecos que aparecieron en 1992 y que le hicieron famoso en el panorama artístico internacional), en instalaciones narrativas y espectaculares, compuestas por decorados de carácter burlesco y trágico al mismo tiempo.
Sus obras figuran en las colecciones más importantes, como la del Centre Pompidou. Recientemente, su trabajo se ha presentado en el MoMA de Nueva York, dando lugar a la edición de un catálogo de su colección personal de documentos históricos relacionados con la cultura popular del entretenimiento, el ocultismo y los espectáculos de magia.
Tony Oursler was born in New York in 1957 and is an important figure on the American art scene. It was at Cal Arts (California Institute of Arts) that he recorded his first video tapes and met the artist Mike Kelley with whom he founded an experimental punk-rock group, The Poetics, in 1977.
Within video art, Tony Oursler resorts to a form of dramatisation that hybridises a wide variety of media: video, film, photography, painting and sculpture, but also music and sound tapes that are the subject of a specific work.
Very early on, he extended his screen design to unusual supports, on the scale of architecture and public space, but also on rag dummies (the famous dummies or dolls which appeared in 1992 and made him famous on the international art scene), in narrative and spectacular installations, made up of sets that are both burlesque and tragic at the same time.
His works are included in the most important collections, such as that of the Centre Pompidou. Recently, his work has been presented at the MoMA in New York, leading to the publication of a catalogue of his personal collection of historical documents related to the popular culture of entertainment, occultism and magic shows.
