Baumgärtel nació en Leipzig (Alemania) y, tras una primera formación como técnico especializado en maquinaria, se matriculó en la Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst de la ciudad. Allí estudió de 1991 a 2000 con Arno Rink, compartiendo estudio con Neo Rauch y formando parte de la generación conocida como la Nueva Escuela de Leipzig. Junto con otros cinco graduados, fundó la Galería Liga de Berlín en 2000.
En 2005, la obra de Baumgärtel se incluyó en dos importantes estudios sobre la escena de Leipzig: La vida después de la muerte: New Leipzig Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection, en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Massachusetts, y From Leipzig: Obras de la Colección de la Familia Ovitz, en el Museo de Arte de Cleveland. Sus escenas melancólicas y extrañamente creíbles han aparecido en más de 20 exposiciones individuales y más de 50 colectivas en todo el mundo, y se encuentran en importantes colecciones públicas y privadas, como el Museo ARKEN de Arte Moderno de Copenhague, la SØR Rusche Sammlung de Berlín, el Museo Weserburg de Arte Moderno de Bremen y la Saatchi Gallery de Londres.

Baumgärtel was born in Leipzig, Germany and, after first training as a skilled machine technician, enrolled at the city’s Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst. He studied there from 1991-2000 under Arno Rink, sharing studio space with Neo Rauch and forming part of the generation known as the New Leipzig School. Together with five other graduates, he founded the Liga Gallery, Berlin in 2000.
In 2005, Baumgärtel’s work was included in two major surveys of the Leipzig scene: Life After Death: New Leipzig Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and From Leipzig: Works from the Ovitz Family Collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art. His melancholic, strangely believable scenes have appeared in more than 20 solo shows, over 50 group exhibitions worldwide, and can be found in significant public and private collections including the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen; SØR Rusche Sammlung, Berlin; Weserburg Museum of Modern Art, Bremen and the Saatchi Gallery, London.
