Life Eternal cuenta tres historias entrelazadas sobre la inmortalidad. La primera trata del explorador español Juan Ponce de León y su legendaria búsqueda de la Fuente de la Juventud. La segunda nos habla de Henrietta Lacks, una negra pobre cultivadora de tabaco cuyas células cancerosas se utilizaron para crear la primera línea celular humana inmortal. La tercera historia trata de James Bedford, la primera persona que se sometió a congelación criogénica con la esperanza de revivir en el futuro.
A través de los siglos, estos tres personajes históricos entablan una conversación atemporal sobre sus últimos días de vida. Al mismo tiempo, Life Eternal aborda los complejos e inquietantes temas históricos que saltan tan vívidamente de sus historias: colonialismo, explotación y tecno-utopía. Esta obra es un diálogo poético sobre la eterna conversación sobre el tiempo y nuestra actitud hacia él.
Life Eternal tells three intertwining stories about immortality. The first story is about Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon and his legendary search for the Fountain of Youth. The second tells us of Henrietta Lacks, a poor black tobacco farmer whose cancer cells were used to create the first immortal human cell line. The third story takes up James Bedford, the first person to undergo cryogenic freezing in hopes of future revival.
Moving across centuries, these three historical characters enter into a timeless conversation with each other on their last few days of life. At the same time, Life Eternal touches upon the complex and troubling historical themes that jump out so vividly from their stories – colonialism, exploitation, and techno-utopianism. This work is a poetic dialogue on the eternal conversation on time and our attitude toward it.
