“El término distopía, surge por oposición al concepto de utopía, el lugar donde todo es como debería ser. Distopía, no solo indica negación sino también alteración, es, por tanto, la antítesis de la sociedad perfecta, un lugar del todo indeseable producto de los fracasos del “progreso”.” Viaje al final de la ciudad. Leonardo Lippolis En julio de 1972 el complejo urbanístico residencial de Pruitt-Igoe, una unidad de habitación “lecorbusiana”, edificada en la periferia de Saint-Louis (Missouri) por el arquitecto Minoru Yamasaki entre 1952 y 1955, fue volada por los aires a petición de sus habitantes, una masa de campesinos obligados a la inmigración urbana. Casualidad, mala suerte, o signo preciso de los tiempos, más de treinta años después otro derrumbe, el de las Torres Gemelas, el 11 de septiembre de 2001, construidas por el mismo Yamasaki, va a marcar un nuevo momento de ruptura histórica. Provocando que los protocolos de manejo de multitudes se reescribieran y que los ciudadanos viviesen en un estado de terror constante. Se ubicaron más cámaras de seguridad para monitorear permanentemente la ciudad con el fin de evitar nuevas acciones terroristas, convirtiendo la privacidad en una utopía y viviendo en una vigilancia similar a la del Gran Hermano. Pesadilla y sueño, distopía y heterotopía, ciudad y apocalipsis. En este vídeo se yuxtaponen fragmentos, a modo de «found footage”, de estos dos hitos claves en la historia y en el destino del mundo y de la ciudad contemporánea. Documentos audiovisuales pertenecientes a la película experimental «Koyaanisqatsi» de Godfrey Reggio, 1983. En el que aparece la demolición de Pruitt-igoe, siendo modificado el ritmo original de la película que aparece rebobinada, avanzando la misma y devolviéndola a un ritmo normal. Y «WTC 9/11» del fotoperiodista Mark LaGanga’s, 2001, quien documenta el derrumbe de las Twin Towers y los momentos posteriores y del que solo se ha utilizado parte del audio correspondiente al derrumbe de la segunda torre.
