Queen, A Portrait of Madonna (2005) y King, A Portrait of Michael Jackson (2005), tratan sobre la relación entre estrella-fan. En ambas obras los dos personajes son retratados en su ausencia, a partir de las proyecciones de los fans que compran sus discos, que los veneran y que les hicieron estrellas en primer lugar. El retrato de Jackson está filmado en Berlín, el de Madonna en Milán una semana más tarde. Una serie de admiradores fervientes de ambas estrellas fueron invitados a un estudio de grabación profesional y se les dio la oportunidad de interpretar individualmente los discos Inmacullate Collection y Thriller de la primera a la última canción.
La propia artista lo explica así: “Quería reproducir la experiencia que se tiene en casa cuando se escucha un disco que uno ama y se canta entero, pero con condiciones de grabación profesionales. Aparte de esto, no hice ningún intento de dirigir a los fans, ellos eligieron lo que querían vestir, si querían traer atrezzo, y cómo querían interpretar el álbum. Algunos bailaron y cantaron como si les fuera la vida en ello. Otros se abrieron paso tímidamente a través de la experiencia”.
King, A Portrait of Michael Jackson (2005), se presentó en España por primera vez, coincidiendo con el 25 aniversario de la publicación de Thriller, el álbum más vendido en la historia de la música.
It was presented in Spain for the first time to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the release of «Thriller,» the best-selling album in music history.
The project delves into the star-fan relationship. The characters are depicted in their absence from the projections of the fans who purchase their records, worship them, and essentially elevate them to stardom. The portrait of Jackson was filmed in Berlin. A group of fervent admirers of the star were invited to a professional recording studio and given the opportunity to individually perform «Immaculate Collection» and «Thriller,» from the first song to the last. The artist explains it like this: “I wanted to replicate the sing-along experience one has at home when listening to a beloved record, but under professional recording conditions. Apart from this, I made no attempt to direct these fans; they chose their attire, props, and how they wished to interpret the album. Some danced and sang as if their lives depended on it, while others timidly navigated through the experience.”
