El “Man of Sorrows” de Bill Viola, parte de la serie The Passions, representa el encuentro de una persona anónima con un dolor profundo y la pérdida. Similar a los íconos devocionales tradicionales del Cristo sufriente, se nos muestra la imagen de un hombre común llorando, derramando lágrimas sin explicación, en un dolor
que solo se intensifica, enmarcado en un retrato clásico y exhibido en una pequeña pantalla plana portátil sobre una mesa. El artista describe esta imagen como una “ventana dolorosamente privilegiada hacia un momento privado e íntimo de angustia extrema”. A lo largo de la secuencia de movimientos lentos, el hombre permanece en un estado continuo de tristeza y llanto.

Similar to traditional devotional icons of the suffering Christ, we are shown the image of an ordinary man weeping, shedding tears without explanation, in a grief that only intensifies, framed by a portrait of the suffering Christ.
