Le Cube \u2013 independent art room <\/strong>(marr)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Traveling narratives<\/strong> is a regional art and research project that aims to promote cooperation between cultural operators and artists in Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Libya and Egypt, and to establish long-term cooperation and horizontally-based partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through residencies, exhibitions, projections, talks, workshops and conferences, the project compares and links individually experienced history(s), the so-called micro stories, traditions, legends and myths in the countries of North Africa. The purpose is to create and shed light on alternative narratives, often suppressed by the official History, and use them as a starting point for new social and cultural utopias. The project attaches particular importance to the involvement of a heterogeneous audience, who is invited to actively participate in the discussions among other activities -which are offered free of charge -and thus make a valuable contribution to the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022A Selection of Videos from travelling narratives<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The residencies and exhibitions set up in the framework of this project have resulted into the partial production and exhibition of different works of various formats. For this event, we have chosen a selection of videos by three artists who have participated in traveling narratives with these works and more. Hanane El Farissi worked on the completion of her video La Singla, during her residency at Le Cube \u2013independentart room. Abdessamad El Montassir has produced Ashayef which he conceived and developped during his residency at Le Cube, and extended and completed during his residency in Mauritania. Rawand Haress has participated with Dehia, during a group exhibition of Libyan artists, that was organized for the project traveling narratives, at Le cube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Cube \u2013independent art room<\/a><\/strong> is devised as a space of exhibition, residence and research that is centered on contemporary artistic practices. Its approach revolves around projects that raise social, cultural and political questions, and proposals that question History and narratives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this dynamic, Le Cube designs and develops a vast program of exhibitions that link artistic issues to other dimensions of research, in order to carry out a constantly evolving reflection on our environment. A place for analysis and experimentation, Le Cube adopts and supports an approach that allows the artists and audiences to express their reflections and views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the activities of Le Cube give shape to a rich universality which, by making the disciplines porous, makes it possible to explore new territories and creates an interdisciplinary platform of dialogue and meeting for audiences and professionals of all fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its founding in 2005, Le Cube -independent art room has presented more than 90 exhibitions and events in the field of contemporary art, has collaborated with more than 100 national and international artists, and has organized numerous educational and socio-artistic activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abPlace and Displacement in the video artworks of Ranbir Kaleka and Bani Abidi\u00bb<\/strong>

This presentation will show and discuss images from a range of projects by two leading video artists: Ranbir Kaleka (from India) and Bani Abidi (from Pakistan, living in Berlin) appreciating their work in relation to other contemporary artists from the region. The discussion will explore how their videos present a critique of specific political situations in South Asia, observing particular aesthetic choices in the filmmaking process. In Abidi\u2019s case, concepts of cultural displacement and distancing are evident in her work. I will show an extract from Abidi\u2019s video, The Distance from Her<\/em>e (2010) in which she re-stages the mechanisms of exclusion and corporeal control that South Asians undergo when getting the necessary authorisation to allow them cross national borders (in Asia, and in other countries). As an artist who exhibits most extensively in international biennales and galleries, her videos, produced in Lahore and Karachi, also comment on how Pakistani culture is represented both within this nation, and beyond it. In Kaleka\u2019s videos and artworks, the theme of displacement occurs in a very different sense. His video installation, House of Opaque Water <\/em>(10 mins, 2013, which will be screened) concerns the displacement of a rural community who belong to the Bangladesh and Indian Sundarban river delta . Due to environmental crisis, the protagonist of this video was forced to migrate: his home village being submerged by flooding. Kaleka\u2019s video installations also create an optical displacement: he projects his videos onto canvases that are already painted upon, creating a relationship between the static painting and the moving projection. In this liminal space \u2018between two worlds\u2019 he uses this form to make work about memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memory is a Ghost Train<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This program wants to show some of the works done by Spanish artists which have been in contact with different Asian countries, when they travelled throughout the continent since 2005 up to now. The different approaches that will be shown only share among them a critical look and the intention to explore a site in different ways, as it is done by Dionisio Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong><\/a>, Mana Salehi<\/a><\/strong> or Marisa Gonz\u00e1lez<\/a><\/strong>, Sergi Aguilar<\/a><\/strong>, Magdalena Correa<\/a><\/strong> and Antoni Muntadas<\/a><\/strong>. Most of these moving images look like presences that run away and disappear with time, despite remaining before us as ghosts of memory that we see again in the waking state. This is a first collaboration between Casa Asia<\/strong> and the PROYECTOR Video Art Festival,<\/strong> which we would like to keep going on in the next editions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
