Cruce opens on Thursday, October 19, the first solo exhibition in Madrid of the American artist and pioneer of new media art, Gary Hill. Curated by Mario Guti\u00e9rrez Cru, with the support of PROYECTOR\/Moving Image Platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This exhibition, whose title alludes to unfinished actions, works in progress, presents both current works by the artist, such as None of the Above (2021\/22), The Whisper Room (2017\/22), as well as the earlier piece Remembering Paralinguay (2000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the first work, None of the Above, the artist, as in many of his pieces, presents himself in the first person, in front of the camera, on a fragmented, analytical journey. Words and images merge and clash, where zeros and ones are more than just a technological language. His work always carries that poetic turn, in which cutting-edge technology is absorbed and almost disappears, giving way to abrupt, stuttering sound\u2014sometimes incomprehensible\u2014like the slam of a rapper spitting out words, tonalities that an eager viewer must reconstruct in their mind. Gary is not easy\u2014he proposes riddles, detours, leaps in syntax. He invites us to follow him in that spoken word style that defines him, to rescue a discourse that belongs to him, one that we sometimes manage to glimpse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In The Whisper Room, which could perhaps be considered the initiatory piece of the exhibition, he draws us into a recording studio, into a conceptually closed room, designed for a one-on-one, for an intimate encounter. He presents a video in which he invites us to stand before a monitor and feel inside this narration booth, almost compelling us to interact with the microphone before us. Gary speaks to us, whispers to us, invites us to stay, not to leave, to be with him\u2014even to \u201csmell his belly for the first time,\u201d as his discourse says. He makes us his confidant, his most intimate self. Although not new in his work, Gary often does this: telling us his life in fragments, sighs, or blows, whether visual or bodily. Everything in him is visceral\u2014his voice, his phonetics, his words are blades that cut through or caress us. Nothing is accidental; everything is intentional in this crossing of states and tenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the third piece, Remembering Paralinguay, a point emerges from infinity, from nothingness, from an undefined space. It grows, approaches, takes shape as a body, confronts us, shouts at us\u2014almost as if a wild animal were sniffing us out in the forest. It howls at us in a language only Gary can understand; the rest, as always with him, we must imagine, feel, or shut out. Perhaps too intense for the viewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Poetry and corporeality, sounds and lights, vowels and consonants, zeros and ones, caresses and blows\u2014this is Gary Hill, who invites us to accompany him in his unfinished present, thankfully so. As always, he exposes himself, both to us and to himself. Always generous, sometimes obscene, sometimes tender, like a bear (whether plush or wild).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
