Akram Zaatari\u2019s latest film, \u201d28 Nights and a Poem,\u201d explores the work of photographer Hashem el Madani, who has run a commercial photography studio in southern Lebanon for the past five decades. After spending years photographing people in front of their stores, in public squares or on the beach, Madani opened the studio in response to his community\u2019s desire to appear on camera. Moving between el Madani\u2019s studio in Sa\u00efda and the Arab Image Foundation (an image archive in Beirut that now houses the bulk of el Madani\u2019s photographic collection), the film examines the changing locations, status and function of the photographic practice and preservation through various analog and digital media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
