Variaciones sobre una granada
Fun Facts of Movie
This short reel can be described as a cinematographic still-life, focusing on an arrangement of pomegranates, the emblematic fruit of Granada. It integrates animation techniques (including single-frame and stop-motion cinematography) with picto-luminic techniques. Figurative and abstract images are projected and artistically blend with the spherical bodies of the pomegranates, creating an anamorphic effect. Warping and flash effects are produced using incident laser light and other light impacts. Translucent elements serve as filters in front of the lens, adding depth and unique textures to the visuals. The dissections and detailed views of the pomegranates’ insides emphasize the vibrant red seeds, the peel, and the yellow membrane covering them. The artist achieves kaleidoscopic and prismatic effects through simple optical devices, with dynamic zooms in and out, bringing the pomegranates’ still-life to life.
This work stands as one of the finest examples of «picto-luminic touches,» a technique Val del Olmo explored in his later years. Alongside recordings or notes filmed in Super 8 of light alchemies, images, and everyday objects, it showcases his mastery of light manipulation and visual storytelling.
