Se muestran distintos comisariados de Festivales de relevancia internacional que forman parte de la RED PROYECTOR y colaboran con el Festival a través del intercambio de contenidos. Bang! Para este año estamos trabajando para presentar comisariados bajo la temática “Una mirada al sureste” con los países: India, Pakistán, Taiwán, Japón, Grecia y Norte de África.
Estos comisariados permitirán tomar conciencia a los asistentes de la relación entre el contexto geográfico, la situación política y social y la influencia de éstas en el videoarte.

Traveling narratives is a regional art and research project that aims to promote cooperation between cultural operators and artists in Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Libya and Egypt, and to establish long-term cooperation and horizontally-based partnerships.

Through residencies, exhibitions, projections, talks, workshops and conferences, the project compares and links individually experienced history(s), the so-called micro stories, traditions, legends and myths in the countries of North Africa. The purpose is to create and shed light on alternative narratives, often suppressed by the official History, and use them as a starting point for new social and cultural utopias. The project attaches particular importance to the involvement of a heterogeneous audience, who is invited to actively participate in the discussions among other activities -which are offered free of charge -and thus make a valuable contribution to the project.

•A Selection of Videos from travelling narratives

The residencies and exhibitions set up in the framework of this project have resulted into the partial production and exhibition of different works of various formats. For this event, we have chosen a selection of videos by three artists who have participated in traveling narratives with these works and more. Hanane El Farissi worked on the completion of her video La Singla, during her residency at Le Cube –independentart room. Abdessamad El Montassir has produced Ashayef which he conceived and developped during his residency at Le Cube, and extended and completed during his residency in Mauritania. Rawand Haress has participated with Dehia, during a group exhibition of Libyan artists, that was organized for the project traveling narratives, at Le cube.

Le Cube –independent art room is devised as a space of exhibition, residence and research that is centered on contemporary artistic practices. Its approach revolves around projects that raise social, cultural and political questions, and proposals that question History and narratives.

With this dynamic, Le Cube designs and develops a vast program of exhibitions that link artistic issues to other dimensions of research, in order to carry out a constantly evolving reflection on our environment. A place for analysis and experimentation, Le Cube adopts and supports an approach that allows the artists and audiences to express their reflections and views.

All the activities of Le Cube give shape to a rich universality which, by making the disciplines porous, makes it possible to explore new territories and creates an interdisciplinary platform of dialogue and meeting for audiences and professionals of all fields.

Since its founding in 2005, Le Cube -independent art room has presented more than 90 exhibitions and events in the field of contemporary art, has collaborated with more than 100 national and international artists, and has organized numerous educational and socio-artistic activities.

«Place and Displacement in the video artworks of Ranbir Kaleka and Bani Abidi»
Lucia King.
This presentation will show and discuss images from a range of projects by two leading video artists: Ranbir Kaleka (from India) and Bani Abidi (from Pakistan, living in Berlin) appreciating their work in relation to other contemporary artists from the region. The discussion will explore how their videos present a critique of specific political situations in South Asia, observing particular aesthetic choices in the filmmaking process. In Abidi’s case, concepts of cultural displacement and distancing are evident in her work. I will show an extract from Abidi’s video, The Distance from Here (2010) in which she re-stages the mechanisms of exclusion and corporeal control that South Asians undergo when getting the necessary authorisation to allow them cross national borders (in Asia, and in other countries). As an artist who exhibits most extensively in international biennales and galleries, her videos, produced in Lahore and Karachi, also comment on how Pakistani culture is represented both within this nation, and beyond it. In Kaleka’s videos and artworks, the theme of displacement occurs in a very different sense. His video installation, House of Opaque Water (10 mins, 2013, which will be screened) concerns the displacement of a rural community who belong to the Bangladesh and Indian Sundarban river delta . Due to environmental crisis, the protagonist of this video was forced to migrate: his home village being submerged by flooding. Kaleka’s video installations also create an optical displacement: he projects his videos onto canvases that are already painted upon, creating a relationship between the static painting and the moving projection. In this liminal space ‘between two worlds’ he uses this form to make work about memory.

VisionMix is a curatorial collective with a focus on video art produced in (and about) South Asian cultural movements and moving image histories. It is currently directed by Lucia King (London, UK) and Rashmi Sawhney (Bengaluru, India).
 

This network fosters international alliances that generate exhibitions, screenings, publications and wider public debate. Its activities provide platforms for collaboration and the sharing of practices amongst film and video makers, scholars and curators in Europe and Asia around the nexus of programmed activities. The majority of VisionMix’s associates are resident in the UK and India, with guest collaborators contributing from Pakistan, the US, Hong Kong and São Paolo. VisionMix has facilitated the production of artworks and films that explore environmental and urban ecologies, citizen rights and artists’ transformative agency through their productions. We generate public involvement in exhibitions, screenings, publications and online networking locally and internationally. Our aims are also to:

·       Foster research on new approaches to the curating of lens-based media art by creating dialogue through our associate partners across regions.
·       Promote and showcase projects in artists’ film-making, essay films, experimental documentary, video installation and photography.
·       Support dialogue between different strands of filmmaking in contemporary new media trends, taking into account the geo-political differences in our production systems and environmental contexts.
·       Encourage intellectual exchange between art critics, commissioning editors, curators, artists, filmmakers, film and art historians and theorists.
·       Author publications that review the ways in which the funding, commissioning and exhibition of lens based media operates in relation to South Asian film & video.
·       Question perspectives and framings in art historical accounts in which of groups have been marginalised.

Memory is a Ghost Train

This program wants to show some of the works done by Spanish artists which have been in contact with different Asian countries, when they travelled throughout the continent since 2005 up to now. The different approaches that will be shown only share among them a critical look and the intention to explore a site in different ways, as it is done by Dionisio González, Mana Salehi or Marisa González, Sergi Aguilar and Magdalena Correa. Most of these moving images look like presences that run away and disappear with time, despite remaining before us as ghosts of memory that we see again in the waking state. This is a first collaboration between Casa Asia and the PROYECTOR Video Art Festival, which we would like to keep going on in the next editions.

I invited HSU Chia-Wei’s «Marshal Tie-Jia» to talk about Taiwan’s historical connection with China, and then LIU Yu’s work «Somehow I Feel relaxed here», which links the Japan colonial times to current, and the latest piece is from artist WANG Pei-Hsuan to review the situation of Taiwan to neighborhood countries such as Indonesia, HK…

VIDEOART CENTER Tokyo/VCTscreening program“The Lost Decade”VCT was founded in 2001 as an association dedicated to videoart and other time based arts in Japan. VCT is managed independently as a Non-Profit Organization by videoartists and the staffs who consider it’s necessary to establish a critical role of the videoart of the present against the society of spectacle. As recent activities, VCT took part in “50th Anniversary of Video Art / Les Instant Video2013” (2013, Marseiile, France), and worked on a documentary video project with oral history of early video artists in Japan, «Kikai de Mirukoto=Eye Machine/To See by Chance -the Pioneers of Japanese Videoarts-“(2012, 82min.),also presented open air video art show in urban spaces, as “Video Art Promenade in ASAGAYA/ Wall to Wall”(2015, Tokyo). “Indus art Collective” is an establishment that has been based on a view of interaction through ‘Culture’ as instrument for social transformation and change.
The groups of artists from different creative platforms intend to help and promote artists and their activities, creating new openings and opportunities. And thus bridging the parameters with cities as well as villages and other provinces and countries.
As in recent years’ objectification and commoditization deprived/ restricted art practices from performing its larger social roles as agents of transformation and critical reflection. Rather than promoting aesthetically desirable objects, art should be understood as a healing practice which allows the human mind to decipher and reorient.  It is imperative to mention here that Indus will enable artist to shift towards community oriented collaborations that challenge conventional values enshrined in art and open further possibilities of greater integration of art into social fabric, reflecting, to realize “A BOUNDARY WAS NEVER THERE”  

The program that Indus wants to instill is to give awareness of visual knowledge through workshops and art shows for cities and villages. Its objective is to connect and communicate with anyone and everyone, encompassing a global awareness of art that further allow us to interact with artists from other countries. And also to bring art out of its confined modes and to present it publically.

Anatomy of silence | Curated by Gioula Papadopoulou

“Anatomy of silence” is a selection of Greek video art, which gathers visual works that silently but sharply comment on human existence, through strong symbolic images and minimalistic actions. Curated by Gioula Papadopoulou, the selection, which features 9 video works by acclaimed and emerging video artists from Greece, was initially screened in the frame of Video Art Miden 2018 in Kalamata, Greece.

Video Art Miden is an independent organization for the exploration and promotion of video art. Founded by an independent group of Greek artists in 2005, it has been one of the earliest specialized video-art festivals in Greece, setting as basic aims to stimulate the creation of original video art, to help spread it and develop relevant research.

Through collaborations and exchanges with major international festivals and organizations, it has been recognized as one of the most successful and interesting video art platforms internationally and as an important cultural exchange point for Greek and international video art. Miden screening programs have traveled in many cities of Greece and all over the world, and they are hosted by significant festivals, museums and institutions globally.

Liminal Spaces 2019 By Cristobal Catalan.

We are in an age of conflicting truths and dialectics. Many of the frameworks of our modern existence are in a state of ambiguity. As we negotiate our darkest fears and uncertainties, we embrace the unknown. The traditional Hegelian dichotomies are, in many ways, dissolving around us. The spaces of left and right, blue and red, worker and owner, global and local…become easier to transcend. The only place to hide from the destruction is in the middle, a place away from the binary… a state, if you will, of deterritorialisation. We will hide in the ‘in-between’, the ‘in-betwixt’… the liminal space.

“Liminal Spaces 2019”, curated by Cristobal Catalan, is a selection of video art from innovative and emerging artists from South East Asia that look epistemologically at the discourse of a world increasingly located in the liminal.

The selected works from Mark Salvatus and Pham Ngoc Lan are reconstructing the landscapes of resistance, using the liminal space with new approaches and perspectives in modern video art from South East Asia. The works explore disruptions and fixtures in a world of shrinking geographies, place and race as discursive practice. History, perspective and technologies are “directed” in some sense. The nature of this “directedness” raises many questions about the explicitness of “looking” and its penetration of public and private space.

 

Biography:

Cristobal Catalan is an award-winning film-maker and curator with a focus on emerging technologies, video art and interactive media. He is interested in the shifting power plays of modern society and their interconnectivity to an increasingly hybrid existence. In partnership with Unison, TUC, and BECTU, Cristobal was a judge at the London Labour Film Festival and was also festival programmer and co-curator for an annual photography festival with the world renowned Royal Photography Society. Cristobal currently sits on the board of trustees for the British arts charity Fertile Ground Charity and previously connected with the Asia Pacific International Ethnographic Festival, Melbourne University. As a creative researcher, Cristobal was a regular visiting lecturer at the University of London and has works that have been screened
and exhibited widely in academic, art and commercial contexts including MOMA, BBC and London’s Tenderpixel Soho Gallery. His works have also been selected for numerous international film festivals including London Soho Rushes Film and the London Spanish Film Festival.
